Guildford Cricketer’s Bold Plan: Helicopter from Wedding to Lord’s
A Dream Fixture Clashes with Life's Biggest Day
Peter Melhuish's life is about to change dramatically—twice in 24 hours. The Guildford-based cricketer, 32, is marrying fiancée Izzy Upton in North Wales on Saturday, 5 September, then racing to play at Lord's the very next morning for his beloved Blackheath Cricket Club.
The timing couldn't be tighter. Blackheath has reached the final of the prestigious Cawston Press Village Cup, and Melhuish, the team captain, is expected to lead from the crease at 11:00 BST on Sunday, 6 September. What makes this clash particularly poignant is that Melhuish has been part of Blackheath since he was six years old—fifty years of loyalty to the club.
When wedding plans began over a year ago, neither Melhuish nor Izzy anticipated the club's remarkable success in this nationwide tournament, which has run since 1972. The Cawston Press Village Cup is a prized achievement for grassroots clubs across the UK, drawing teams from every corner of the country. For a local side to reach the final represents years of dedication and community investment.
Community Rallies: Blackheath's £9,000 Helicopter Dream
Here's where Blackheath Cricket Club is showing what true community spirit means. Rather than accepting defeat to geography, the club has mobilised to raise approximately £9,000 for a one-hour helicopter flight from North Wales to London. It's an ambitious ask, but the determination is real.
The alternative—a 5am taxi ride from the wedding venue—would leave Melhuish exhausted and missing precious hours with his new bride. Instead, the club is rallying supporters and members to make the impossible possible. This isn't just about one player; it's about recognising the extraordinary commitment Melhuish has shown to Blackheath across five decades.
Izzy Upton has been remarkably understanding throughout the planning process. “She's been really supportive and very understanding of how much it means, not just to me but the club too,” Melhuish explained. The couple's willingness to navigate this unique situation speaks volumes about their relationship and shared values. For Izzy, supporting her new husband's passion for the club demonstrates the kind of partnership that strengthens communities. The club's backing of the couple shows how deeply Melhuish is valued beyond just his cricketing ability.
What This Means for Guildford's Grassroots Cricket Scene
Blackheath's journey to Lord's represents something larger than one match. It's a testament to how grassroots cricket clubs across Surrey—from Guildford to Horsley, Dorking, Woking, and East Horsley—continue thriving despite modern pressures. These community-run organisations depend entirely on volunteers like Melhuish who dedicate decades to building something lasting.
The Village Cup itself symbolises the importance of preserving grassroots sport. Founded in 1972, it's provided thousands of local players the chance to compete at the highest levels available to them, maintaining the traditional heart of English cricket beyond professional circuits.
For residents across the region, this story offers an inspiring reminder of what happens when communities pull together. Whether the helicopter fundraising succeeds or not, Blackheath's commitment to supporting their captain demonstrates values that extend far beyond sport—loyalty, teamwork, and genuine care for fellow members. Local cricket clubs, amateur sports organisations, and community groups everywhere face similar challenges balancing tradition with modern realities. Blackheath's response shows it's possible to honour both.
