A beloved rocking horse, affectionately known as “Bobby,” has officially retired after half a century of dedicated service at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford. Donated to the children's ward in 1974 by a patient's parent who was also a hospital carpenter, Bobby became an iconic fixture, providing comfort and distraction to countless young patients over five decades. For generations of children, including current hospital staff and their own offspring, Bobby represented a small piece of normalcy and joy during their hospital stays, offering a therapeutic outlet in what could often be a daunting environment. Its presence helped alleviate anxiety, offering a familiar and playful element amidst medical procedures and recovery.

However, the passage of time took its toll on Bobby. The horse, showing significant wear and tear including a missing ear and a wobbly head, was eventually deemed a health and safety risk. Due to its age and condition, it could no longer safely be ridden by children, prompting the difficult decision to remove it from active service. Hospital staff, particularly play specialist Julie Taylor, recognized the horse's profound sentimental value and ensured it received a respectful and celebratory send-off, acknowledging its immense contribution to the well-being of young patients.

In a heartwarming turn, Bobby has been given a new lease on life and a new name, “Alfonso.” It has found a permanent home at the Guildford Museum, where it will be preserved and displayed as a cherished piece of local history. The museum plans to integrate Alfonso into future exhibitions, potentially focusing on the hospital's legacy or the evolution of childhood in the region, ensuring its story continues to touch lives. The hospital, meanwhile, intends to acquire a modern, safe replacement to uphold the tradition of providing a comforting rocking horse for its future young patients. This story underscores the deep emotional connections formed with simple objects that offer solace and joy in challenging times, marking the end of an era for a truly special hospital companion.
