England Star Freya Kemp Signs with Surrey: What It Means
A Major Win for Surrey Cricket and the Region
The cricket world across Surrey, Guildford, and surrounding communities has reason to celebrate this week. The Kia Oval in South London has just secured one of England's most promising young talents: 21-year-old Freya Kemp, who's signed a multi-year contract beginning in the 2027 season. For those who follow domestic and international women's cricket, this is significant news that signals Surrey's commitment to building a competitive, world-class squad. Kemp's decision to leave Hampshire and move closer to her roots in the South East demonstrates Surrey's growing reputation as a destination club for elite female cricketers. Her track record speaks volumes—49 caps for England, 36 wickets across international formats, and a standout performance at the 2026 Women's T20 World Cup where she took 4-22 against Sri Lanka. Emma Calvert, Surrey's director of women's cricket, has already flagged what local fans should expect: a player with genuine international pedigree, proven work ethic, and the character to elevate the entire squad.
Understanding Kemp's Journey and Why This Matters Locally
For community members across Woking, Dorking, Horsley, and East Horsley who support local sport, understanding Kemp's career arc helps explain why this signing resonates beyond just the cricket pitch. She began her career exceptionally young—making her debut aged just 14—and has since played for Sussex, the Southern Vipers, and Hampshire at domestic level, while also featuring in high-profile franchise competitions including The Hundred and Australia's Women's Big Bash League. This multi-year commitment from Surrey represents validation that the club recognises her potential as a long-term asset. Kemp herself acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, paying tribute to Hampshire's role in her development while explaining that the chance to play for a club of Surrey's calibre, combined with moving closer to home, made the move right for her career trajectory. For local young cricketers and aspiring athletes across the region, Kemp's continued presence and development at the Kia Oval offers inspiration and a tangible example of how provincial cricket pathways can lead to international success.
What's Next: Following Surrey's Women's Team This Season

The multi-year nature of the deal—without disclosed exact length—suggests this is a significant long-term investment.
