Guildford celebrates its place at heart of UK space industry
Why Guildford matters to Britain's space ambitions
Guildford has quietly become one of Britain's most important hubs for satellite technology and space innovation. The town's credentials run deep, anchored by the University of Surrey's world-class space centre—a facility that ranks among the UK's finest for research and development. But perhaps more significantly, this academic excellence sparked the creation of Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL), a company that has grown into a genuine powerhouse in the commercial space sector. Right here in our town, engineers and scientists are designing and building spacecraft destined for missions across climate monitoring, defence applications, and even the world's first commercial lunar communications service. When you're checking a seven-day weather forecast on your smartphone or accessing internet banking, there's a good chance satellite technology developed in Guildford played a role. The ripple effects extend far beyond the obvious—innovations born from space research have revolutionised medical imaging, from CT scanners to MRI machines. For residents and local businesses, this means Guildford isn't just home to high street shops and commuter stations; it's a genuine innovation centre where careers are launched and global challenges are tackled.
World Space Week brings demonstrations to Tunsgate Quarter
On 10 October, Guildford's high street will transform into a celebration of space exploration when World Space Week events arrive at Tunsgate Quarter Shopping Centre. The University of Surrey and the Institute of Physics are partnering to bring interactive displays and demonstrations that will genuinely fascinate both curious children and adults wondering what the fuss is about. SSTL will be showcasing the real hardware that goes into space—satellite panels, circuit boards, propulsion systems, and working models that demystify how these remarkable machines actually function. It's the kind of hands-on experience that rarely comes to our town centre, offering residents a tangible connection to work happening right on their doorstep. Whether you're passing through between the bathroom fitters near Horsley or grabbing lunch, this is an opportunity to see the cutting edge of British engineering. The event highlights how our community punches well above its weight on the global stage. For families, students considering their futures, and anyone curious about how technology shapes our world, this is unmissable. Mark your calendar now and plan to visit—these opportunities to celebrate local excellence don't come around often.
Careers in space: what locals should know
Jennifer Barry, a senior systems engineer at SSTL, offers valuable insight for anyone considering a career in the space industry—and her advice applies directly to local residents exploring new opportunities. The space sector actively recruits from diverse backgrounds, welcoming talent from aviation, nuclear energy, banking, and countless other fields. You don't need to have studied astrophysics; transferable skills matter enormously. This is particularly relevant for Guildford and surrounding areas like Woking and Dorking, where professionals often seek meaningful career changes. The message is clear: if you're considering a bathroom refurbishment business, engineering role, or any technical career, the space industry values practical experience and problem-solving ability above narrow specialisation. SSTL currently employs hundreds locally and continues expanding, meaning job opportunities are genuine and growing. The broader lesson for our community is that Guildford attracts sophisticated, forward-thinking employers who invest in training and development. For young people, this signals that exciting, innovative careers are available without leaving the region. For established professionals, it suggests opportunities to pivot into cutting-edge work. The World Space Week event offers a perfect chance to explore these possibilities directly with people working in the field.
