John Cleese Brings Holy Grail Comedy Tour to Woking
A Comedy Icon Returns to Surrey Venues
This autumn, one of Britain's most celebrated comedians is bringing a unique theatrical experience to our region. John Cleese, the 86-year-old Monty Python legend, is embarking on a nationwide tour that includes a stop at Woking's premier entertainment venue. The tour offers something special: an introduction to the iconic 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, followed by a live question-and-answer session with Cleese himself. The tour kicks off in Basingstoke on 1 September before moving through various venues including stops in Tunbridge Wells and our own Woking community. For local residents who grew up with Monty Python's Flying Circus or have discovered the cult classic film through later generations, this represents a rare opportunity to experience comedy history in an intimate, interactive setting. Cleese's decision to tour at this stage of his career demonstrates his continued passion for connecting with audiences. Rather than simply screening the film, his personal involvement transforms the evening into a masterclass in British comedy history. This is the kind of cultural event that enriches our local entertainment landscape and draws visitors from across Surrey and neighbouring areas.
What to Expect: Behind-the-Scenes Stories and Film History
When you attend this screening in Woking, you're not just watching a film—you're gaining access to the creative mind behind some of comedy's most memorable moments. Cleese opens the evening with a fifteen-minute introduction covering the film's history and the remarkable circumstances of its creation. He'll share insights from shooting on location in Scotland during April with minimal budget—just £240,000 for the entire production. Attendees will learn about the challenges the cast faced: constant rain, inadequate equipment, and the sheer ambition of bringing Arthurian legend to comedic life. What makes this tour particularly fascinating is Cleese's relationship with the material. Despite having watched Holy Grail over 7,000 times throughout his life, he never actually sits through screenings during the tour—instead, he steps out for dinner during the film, then returns refreshed to answer audience questions. This practical approach reflects both his thorough familiarity with every frame and his genuine interest in what audiences want to know. The film itself now ranks as the 13th funniest movie ever made, a remarkable achievement given the crew had minimal expectation of its cultural impact. For those attending in Woking, expect anecdotes about working with Graham Chapman, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin—the creative powerhouses who shaped British comedy.
