An Organised Crime Group (OCG) consisting of four men, primarily from Woking, has been sentenced following a sophisticated large-scale operation involving the theft of high-value machinery and vehicles across Surrey, Berkshire, Hampshire, and Sussex. The group, led by Ricky and Jimmy St Clair, specialized in targeting expensive 4x4s, most notably Land Rovers and Range Rovers, which were often stolen from driveways or construction sites. Their criminal enterprise amassed stolen goods valued at approximately £350,000, demonstrating the significant scale and financial success of their illicit activities prior to their apprehension.
The OCG employed advanced methods to bypass vehicle security systems, utilizing cloned number plates and quickly disposing of the stolen assets, sometimes through export, to evade detection. This modus operandi allowed them to maintain a lucrative criminal operation for a period, benefiting from the high demand for such vehicles and machinery. Surrey Police‘s Serious Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) launched an extensive investigation in June 2021, employing advanced techniques such as ANPR analysis, forensic examination, and surveillance to dismantle the group. This dedicated police effort led to the arrest and subsequent conviction of all four members. Ricky St Clair, 46, received the longest sentence of six years imprisonment, while Jimmy St Clair, 28, was sentenced to three years and nine months. Younger members, Alfie St Clair, 20, and Charlie St Clair, 23, received suspended sentences with community orders and rehabilitation requirements. The successful prosecution underscores the commitment of law enforcement to combating organised crime and mitigating the significant risks these groups pose to communities and individual property owners.
