Will Young Brings Garden Art to RHS Wisley Show This Summer

Celebrity Gardener Debuts at Wisley

Will Young, best known for his chart-topping music career, is stepping into the world of garden design this summer with an ambitious installation at the RHS Wisley Flower Show. The Evergreen performer has partnered with acclaimed designer Jamie Butterworth to create ‘Out of the Shadows', a conceptual garden that promises to challenge how visitors think about nature and themselves.

The RHS Wisley estate, nestled in the Surrey countryside between Guildford and Dorking, has long been a hub for horticultural innovation and community engagement. This year's show continues that tradition, attracting garden enthusiasts from across the South East. Young's debut represents a significant moment for the venue—bringing popular culture and contemporary psychology into dialogue with traditional garden design.

The installation draws inspiration from Jungian shadow work, a psychological concept exploring the hidden aspects of our personalities. Rather than simply creating a beautiful space, Young and Butterworth have crafted an experience designed to make visitors reflect on their own inner worlds. ‘I hope it encourages people to see how density and shade can be beautiful,' Young explained, emphasizing that the garden serves both aesthetic and introspective purposes.

What to Expect at This Year's Show

Beyond Young's headline installation, the RHS Wisley Flower Show promises a full summer experience for the whole community. Visitors can expect thousands of stunning dahlias in every conceivable shape, colour, and size—a kaleidoscopic display that's become a signature feature of the late-summer event. The show extends far beyond garden displays, offering specialist nurseries showcasing rare and award-winning plants, independent retail vendors, and expert-led talks from renowned horticulturists.

For those planning a visit from surrounding areas like Woking, Horsley, or East Horsley, the show provides an excellent day out combining education, inspiration, and family-friendly entertainment. The venue's accessibility and reputation make it a destination worth the journey. Whether you're a seasoned gardener seeking new plant varieties or simply looking for outdoor inspiration, there's something for everyone.

The RHS has designed the show to cater to diverse interests—from those interested in sustainable planting practices to those seeking shopping opportunities with specialist growers. Expert demonstrations run throughout the day, offering practical advice on everything from garden design principles to plant care.

Why This Matters to Our Community

The RHS Wisley Flower Show represents more than just a summer event—it's a vital community gathering that celebrates local horticultural heritage while attracting visitors from across the region. For residents of Surrey's garden towns and villages, from Guildford's suburban gardens to the rural landscapes near Dorking and East Horsley, this show serves as inspiration for personal outdoor projects.

With growing interest in home improvement and garden refurbishment across the area, many local residents are investing in transforming their outdoor and indoor spaces. Just as bathroom fitters and bathroom refurbishment specialists have seen increased demand from homeowners upgrading their properties, garden designers and landscapers report similar enthusiasm for creating beautiful, functional outdoor spaces. The RHS show provides direct inspiration and connections to suppliers.

Will Young's involvement brings fresh cultural attention to the event, potentially introducing younger audiences to horticulture and garden design. This crossover between entertainment and gardening reflects broader community trends toward wellness, mindfulness, and creating personal sanctuaries at home. For local businesses, increased footfall means economic benefits, while for residents, it's an opportunity to discover new ideas and connect with like-minded enthusiasts in our thriving Surrey community.
